USSD Query [tips]

Almost all GSM users across the world use USSD queries for various purposes like payments, balance enquiries and recharging. Read more on USSD queries here.

In India, we use it for balance enquiries & recharging. For eg., on my AIRCEL, I have to use *125# to check my prepaid balance and similarly other providers have their own codes.
On N900, I cannot use this. It says incorrect number when I dial *125# and here's a solution on how to use it.
The simplest way for USSD queries is to go to the TERMINAL & then type " ussdquery.py *125# " and click enter. Replace *125# with your query. [Click here to see additional options available].
If you do not want to use the terminal, then there are 2 apps which come handy. USSD-PAD & USSD widget. Both are very simple to use. Click here to download them.

PS: I used MaStory which allows you to blog to wordpress, blogger, livejournal & drupal from your Maemo device.

fAPN - GUI to add GPRS APN [apps]

Welcome to my-n900 blog. I'll post about the various apps and tweaks on n900 (Maemo OS) and here comes the first one.
In the default OS on n900, we cannot automatically add a GPRS APN unless we receive the settings directly. To me it was a nightmare because my service provider AIRCEL (India) currently do not support n900 and hence I have to add the settings manually. In the default installation, we can only add new WLAN connections. To add a new GPRS connection, we have to first add a GPRS APN (Access Point Name) and then edit the settings according to our service provider. Thanks to fAPN which is a simple app which lets us do the same.
You can install it from here. And running it is just a cake walk as seen below.

(Click on Add new APN)

(Name it)

(APN is added)

Now go to Settings > Internet Connections; Click on Connections, then select the newly added APN and click edit and follow the steps. That's it. You have successfully added GPRS settings. If you want to delete an APN, just open fAPN and click on delete button beside the APN as can be seen in the first screenshot.

Quick Tip: You can take Screenshots like the above ones on your Nokia n900 using keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + P
